PhD student position
DERI Institute
Galway, Ireland
Sensor Middleware Unit
The Sensor Middleware Unit
The advent of sensor technologies and the Semantic Web provide the
unique opportunity to unify the real and the virtual worlds. It
enables the building of very large infrastructures which for the first
time facilitate the information- driven real-time integration of the
physical world and computers on a global scale. Flexible middleware
technology which abstracts from heterogeneous sensor network
technologies to higher-level functionalities to enable interconnected
sensor networks and processing of sensor data (Sensor Internet) is a
cornerstone of enabling Semantic Reality. The sheer size and dynamic
of this system poses quite novel and unique challenges, which we plan
to investigate in the following years.
We are looking for a PhD student to work in the area of Sensor Data
Management, in particular we want to address the challenges of
building and maintaining a sensor data repository which is
distributed, heterogenous, and constantly updated, and how to
efficiently make the data accessible.
Requirements:
- Completed degree in computer science, applied mathematics, or
similar, with outstanding performance (Master, or equivalent)
- Experience with implementation work in C++ or Java
- Personal initiative, creativity and ability to effectively work in a team
- Good level of written and spoken English
Basic knowledge of distributed algorithms and database systems, e.g.,
from corresponding university classes, is welcome, but not mandatory.
Candidates are requested to submit a cover letter, an academic
curriculum vitae, and the names of 3 references to hr.ie@deri.org
quoting "Sensor Data Management" in the subject of the mail.
Applications from non-native English speakers should also include
copies of their GRE, TOEFL, CPE or similar scores if available.

Summer Doctoral Programme 2010, OII, Univ. of Oxford, UK
Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) 2010
http://www.oii. ox.ac.uk/ teaching/ sdp/Y2010. cfm
We are delighted to announce that the eighth Oxford Internet Institute (OII) Summer Doctoral Programme (SDP) will be held in Oxford from 5-16 July 2010.
Academic programme
The aim of the programme is to bring together advanced doctoral students engaged in dissertation research relating to the Internet and other ICTs. By sharing their work and learning from leading academics in the field, students can enhance the quality and significance of their thesis research and create a peer network of excellent young researchers.
The 2010 Summer Doctoral Programme will draw substantially upon the OII's research strengths and will involve participation from many of our faculty, together with colleagues from other partner institutions. It will emphasise methodological innovation and good practice in research design, and will expose students to the benefits of discussing their research in a multi-disciplinary teaching environment.
The well-established format of the SDP course structure will be continued with daily research seminars and discussions led by an international group of leading researchers. All students will be asked to present their research to their peers in informal seminars. The programme will facilitate deep discussion of both substantive and methodological research issues, and help students frame their research questions and direct their research. It will also seek to generate dialogue and debate between students from different disciplinary backgrounds on issues relating to the OII's broad research themes with a view to identifying topics for future collaborative research.
Research areas
We welcome applications from advanced doctoral students in any discipline whose work in the field of Internet research engages with the OII's research priorities of Everyday life, Governance and democracy, Science and Learning and Shaping the Internet. Reflecting the disciplinary base of the OII, most of the seminars will draw on Internet-related research in the social sciences, but some may also cover aspects of the department's projects in the humanities and computer science.
Tutors
Tutors will be listed here as they are confirmed over the next few weeks.
Fees and scholarships
The course cost of £1550 covers accommodation at Lady Margaret Hall from 4-16 July inclusive, and all course tuition fees. Travel to and from Oxford is not included in this fee. Lunch will be provided on week days at the OII, and several dinners and social events are also included.
We are currently looking for additional funding to provide support for student scholarships. Further information will be made available as such support is confirmed. Please note that students do not need to make a request for a scholarship at the application stage as this will be dealt with once the selection process has been completed.
How to apply
Up to 27 places are available and will be awarded on a competitive basis. Preference will be given to students at an advanced stage of their doctorate who have embarked on writing their thesis. All teaching will be in English, so all applicants should be able to demonstrate their competence in this language.
All student applications must be supported by one or more of the students' current doctoral programme advisors or dissertation supervisors. References will be requested for all students who are offered a place on the programme. Similarly, students should be able to clearly explain how their doctoral studies will benefit from the programme.
SDP2010 Application Form (Microsoft Word, 50kb)
To apply, please download and complete the SDP2010 Application Form (Microsoft Word, 50kb) and return it either as a single email with all relevant attachments to sdp@oii.ox.ac. uk, or as a hard copy (with accompanying documents) to the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford, 1 St Giles, Oxford OX1 3JS, UK.

*Master in Public Administration *
The MPA programme is a one-year degree for mid-career professionals with
more than five years of professional experience. The MPA is designed to
enhance the effectiveness of mid-career professionals from the public,
private and non-profit sectors in addressing complex, multidimensional
policy issues. The MPA programme places great emphasis on management and
decision-making.
*Master in Public Policy *
The MPP programme is a two-year degree for young professionals with 1-5
years of experience. Students learn the fundamental skills of public policy
analysis from the disciplines of politics, economics, and public management.
They also have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of a specific
area by electing to focus their studies on one of five specializations:
Development Studies; Economic Policy and Analysis; International Relations
and Security Studies; Social and Environmental Policy; and Public Management
and Governance. Finally to provide an element of direct practical
experience, MPP students undertake a public policy or management study (the
Policy Analysis Exercise) for a client in the public, private or non-profit
sector.
*Double Degree Opportunities at Columbia University, LSE or Sciences Po*
The MPP programme also offers the invaluable opportunity for qualifying
students to obtain a double degree from the LKY School as well as from one
of our partner institutes which include Columbia University’s School of
International and Public Affairs (SIPA), London School of Economics and
Political Science (LSE), and Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris
(Sciences Po). Students spend one year in Singapore and the second year in
New York, London or Paris, and quite often the school provides full-funding
for the students to study there.
*Fully funded scholarships are available to outstanding candidates.
More information, along with programme application booklets, are available
online at http://www.lkyspp. nus.edu.sg/. The deadline for the MPP and MPA
applications with scholarship is 31 January 2010 for intake in July 2010.

Surface Engineering for Antifouling -
Coordinated Advanced Training (SEACOAT)
This is a temporary web page intended to support recruitment to the network. A more detailed web-site will be running soon
Positions available:
11 Early Stage Researcher (PhD) Fellowships
6 Experienced Researcher (post-doc) Fellowships
Applications are invited for Early Stage Researcher Fellowships (leading to a PhD) and Experienced Researcher Fellowships (post-docs) funded through a Marie Curie Initial Training Network. Most positions are due to start on March 1st 2010 or soon thereafter.
The SEACOAT Network:
The main research goal of the project is to improve understanding of biointerfacial processes involved in the colonisation of surfaces by marine fouling organisms. This will inform the future development of new, environmentally- benign materials and coatings for the practical control of marine biofouling.
Our principal objective is to discover which nano- and micro-scale physico-chemical properties of surfaces influence the adhesion of fouling organisms, through the use of surface engineering technologies to fabricate coatings that vary systematically in relevant surface properties, and length scales.
We will use advanced surface analytical methods to characterise test surfaces for relevant physico-chemical surface properties and how these change after immersion. Parallel adhesion bioassays using a range of representative marine organisms will test intrinsic antifouling properties of surfaces.
Fellows' individual projects will be integrated into one comprehensive research and training network which is strongly based on exchange and transfers between academia and industry. The network will also provide fellows with network-wide training activities (4 Advanced Training Courses, an international Workshop/symposium) . All fellows are expected to collaborate with other Partners in the Consortium through secondments and visits.
